The Vineyard

The Varner-Traul Vineyard was established by David Traul and Lena Varner in 2006 in Talent, Oregon. The vineyard is in an area known as the Wagner Creek Sub-basin, part of the Rogue Valley Appellation. There are over 15 acres of winegrapes planted in 2006 after site evaluation/analysis and recommendations from both Randy Gold and Greg Jones, PhD.

White varietals: Chenin Blanc, Malvasia Bianca, Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc

Red varietals: Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Malbec, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Petit Verdot

Working in the vineyard is a family affair, pulling from Lena's deep roots in the Rogue Valley. The core vineyard crew includes: Lena and her family members: Heather Hamlin (Lena's sister) and Uintah Keever (Lena's mother), as well as David when he has time away from his "day job". The vineyard is managed with consultation from Randy Gold at Pacific Crest Vineyard Services.

The Visionary

David Traul grew up in an agricultural community in Southern Wisconsin, baling hay and working on his father’s sheep farm. No foreigner to hard work, David followed in the footsteps of his father, Don G. Traul, and embarked upon a career as a surgeon.  David moved to Southern Oregon from the Midwest in 1999 to find sunshine and opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. David has a passion for skiing, mountain biking and cross-country dirt biking. Influenced by his mother’s passion for gourmet cooking, and his father’s tales of trips to “The Wine Country,” it was a natural evolution for David to become a “foodie,” developing great appreciation for pairing fine wine and food. After searching for several years, Lena and David found the location on Anderson Creek Road offering a rare convergence of easy access to the freeway, while maintaining the tranquility of a location in the countryside. The site of the vineyard, and their residence, offers grand views of Wagner and Anderson Buttes to the south as well as RoxyAnn and the Valley to the north.
